Lyrics as Poetry

Like many people, I listen to a wide variety of music. I grew up in a household where music was always playing. My mother favored classical, with a healthy dose of folk and Celtic. My father played “Golden Oldies” with a bit of Classic Rock sprinkled in. I played it all.. my first cassette tapes were popular early 90s groups and homemade recordings of radio stations that played 80s hits. I discovered grunge, spent time with alternative, and loved playing my parents’ vinyl collection in our basement.

In addition to my love of rhythm and melody, I have always been fascinated with song lyrics. For anyone who is familiar with my deep attraction to reading and writing poetry, this probably comes as no surprise. Words are important to me.

Have you ever noticed that when you listen to a song, lyrics that speak to you in that moment seem to jump out? Some sort of synchronicity, I suppose.

Today’s lyrics are brought to us by Alanis Morissette after a what is commonly described as a spiritual awakening during a trip to India.

The moment I let go of it was the moment

I got more than I could handle

The moment I jumped off of it

Was the moment I touched down

Thank you, Alanis.
